Coffee Facts
This delicious coffee is grown in south western Honduras, just 20 miles form the border with Guatemala and 10 miles from the border with El Salvador. It is sourced from Cafesmo, a relatively new co-operative based in the Ocotepeque region. Cafesmo has been selling coffee since 2018, however many of its members have been growing coffee and working with roasters for many years, and some for more than five decades. Cafesmo has its own wet and dry mill and prepares fully washed, semi washed, honey processed and natural coffee lots. The 280+ members have been collaborating for many years. The individual fincas are relatively small, most of them ranging from 2-12 hectares, and all their coffees are Fairtrade Organisation certified.
The fincas are located around the hills of Mercedes, with the Cerro Pita proudly towering above them in the west, and flanked on the other side by the Guisayote Natural Park and the Pacayita volcano. This helps create the ideal growing conditions for coffee with an ideal micro-climate, as well as diverse fauna and flora on and around the plantations providing plentiful natural shade. Additionally the Ocotepeque regions is known for its rich soil and perfect altitude range to grow unique richly flavoured coffees. The members grow coffee between 950m and 2000m above sea level, although most of the land is located between 1200m and 1600m.
