The name of the coffee is inspired by the terroir. Despite the dry weather, the region is very cloudy at dawn. "PHUYU" means cloud in Quechua (Quechua is most spoken in the southern and central highland areas of Peru. Around 13% of Peruvians speak Quechua as their mother tongue).
The soil and dry climate of San Miguel del Faique are ideal for growing coffee. Coffee is rooted in the local culture, which celebrates the end of the harvest with a big festival every year. This remote region uses ancient farming methods. Weeding is done with machetes and chaleadoras (a heavy blade used for pruning and weeding). Created in 2020, the Huasimal Coop now has over 100 small producers.
