This exceptional lot is a blend of three nano-lots which placed 6th, 8th and 10th at the Amazonas competition in Northern Peru.
The Amazonas competition was held for the first time in 2018 and was organised by the municipality of Rodriguez de Mendoza in collaboration with a producer group called Café Monteverde. The competition is completely independent and not related to the national Cup of Excellence competition. Its primary objectives are to create incentives for the production of high quality coffees, to present the potential of the Amazonas region on a national and international level and to create a forum where producers and roasters could make direct contact. Out of the 60 lots submitted to the 2018 competition, 10 made it through to the final round and were sold at auction. These lots sold for 2 - 4 times the local market price.
Peru has the potential for truly exceptional coffees. The climate, soil and altitudes are almost perfect and the most common varieties cultivated are some of the oldest; Bourbon, Typica and Caturra. On the downside, until recently not much attention has been paid to post harvest processing and drying. Inefficiencies along the production chain as well as a lack of dry mills with focus on specialty grade preparation have led to the country gaining a reputation for the abundant production of relatively cheap FTO (Fair Trade Organic) lots which boast certification but most do not reach specialty grade.
In recent years, due to market demand, many producers have realised that by separating varieties, controlling their fermentation and drying more slowly they could earn significantly more for their coffee. This means that now Peru is becoming the origin to watch as the quality of the lots being exported is increasing year on year.
