The Queen Ka’ahumanu (short: Queen K) Highway on the Big Island of Hawaii is the most iconic road in triathlon: Athletes competing in the Ironman World Championship spend the longest segment of their race time-trialling up and down this highway which cuts through the lava fields from Kona to Hawi. For many triathletes to race here is the ultimate goal. What is your Queen K?
Café Sierra Azul is a small cooperative composed of around 200 smallholder farmers living within the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve in Mexico's Chiapas State. Sierra Azul means 'Blue Mountains' and comes from the tree covered mountains that are a dime a dozen in around the farms where cooperative members cultivate this coffee.
Sierra Azul's founding principle was to improve livelihoods by enabling members to earn more for their coffee. Today, instead of selling their coffee for low or erratic prices to local buyers, members from 14 communities are earning higher prices and have secure markets for their production. They also benefit from a wide range of social programs that the cooperative has initiated.
