About
We are located, as the name would suggest, in the beautiful spa town of Buxton in the Peak District. Our obsession for coffee started in 2004 with our Simply Thai restaurant business where we were constantly looking at different ways of improving our coffee.
We went through many different coffee makers, innumerable brands and types of coffee but we were never totally happy with the results, we could get good coffee but not exceptional coffee.
After spending thousands on machinery and experimenting with just about every conceivable way of making coffee we decided to try roasting our own coffee. At first we were roasting about 250g at a time which was the maximum our little roaster could do but we were blown away the results, the coffee had so much more flavour and was so smooth with no harsh aftertaste.
It was a eureka moment, we realised we had been focusing on the wrong element, it doesn't matter how or what you brew with if your beans aren't fresh you not going to have a great cup of coffee. We now roast on our stunning Probat roaster which is widely regarded as one of the worlds finest roasters, so we can bring freshly roasted coffee to you.
Dog and Hat
We've always loved the Peak District, so when we heard about Buxton Roastery we had to go and investigate. However, we managed to pick one of the snowiest days of the year to visit and had to push the car up a hill to get there, but it was worth it - the roastery is a fantastic space. Iain is so passionate and knowledgeable about coffee (we think it's his scientific background) so it was great spending time hearing about his approach to sourcing and roasting coffee. Then we learnt more about the Direct Trade arrangements he and Mim have forged in Thailand, and we just couldn't wait to work with them.
