Coffee Facts
Gatukuza is a coffee washing station located in Northern Burundi and providing access to market to nearly 3'000 farmers. The washing station is owned and operated by a Company called Nduwayezu Entreprises, itself owned by Therence Nduwayezu. It is a rather big washing station in size and processing capacity for Burundi, handling up to 35 containers of green coffee equivalent.
The Company has formed the surrounding farmers in groups of 30 which are trained by Leader farmers whom all receive in turn some trainings from the Company. Farmers also receive cherry pulps which they use as manure on their fields which count on average 385 coffee trees for an average production of 1.5 kilos of cherries per tree. This is higher than the country average of 1 kilo and allows farmers in the area to have a better income. Nduwayezu also distributes fertilizers and minerals to the farmers and in some cases may extend loans to their members.
Since 2019 Gatukuza is certified UTZ with support from Supremo in audit preparation and creating access to market. In the 19-20 crop two lots coming from this washing station won the Burundi Cup Of Excellence ranking first and second best of Burundi. Well aware that this would not have been possible without the hard work from the farmers Therence decided to reward them with a 400% price premium on the coffee they each had delivered that season.
