Ask the Roaster - Callum. Owain, Phil from Five Rings

How was the Roastery founded, what was the inspiration?

5 Rings was created over a longstanding friendship which began in 2012, three young aspiring athletes on the national cycling team, all with the shared dream of becoming Olympic Champions. During this journey, we have travelled all four corners of the globe. Without fail, the first thing we would do upon arriving was to begin our search for great coffee, with mixed success.

Since 2016 we have all taken different paths; new challenges, changing disciplines and continuing that Olympic dream. However, constants remain; pursuit of excellent coffee and our friendship. In 2020 we have finally come to a conclusion, why look for the perfect coffee when you can craft your own.

What's your favourite part about working at the Roastery?

Out of the three of us, Phil, is a passionate “coffee producer”, Callum is the passionate “coffee drinker” and Doull is somewhere in between. In that regard Phil is absolutely loving moving from a home made coffee roaster (popcorn machine) to owning Five Rings. We are slowly turning a passion into a profession and it's really rewarding.

What's your proudest accomplishment?

We are a brand new coffee company and have only been up and running for a couple of months now. We are striving to bring speciality coffee to more people and we’ve got some exciting projects lined up!

What’s your favourite place to enjoy a coffee, and what coffee would that be?

There's nothing better than to go on a bike ride in the sun and stop with your mates for a cup of coffee. Professional cyclists can’t have many vices. To us t,he Cafe is our pub.
