Ask the Roaster - Will from River Coffee
How was the Roastery founded, what was the inspiration?
Back in 2017 I was studying at Uni whilst also working for a coffee roastery. I used my dissertation as a platform to research and learn more about coffee from the roots of our industry. I focused my dissertation on corporate social responsibility in coffee. It lead me on an incredible journey which resulted in me booking a one way flight to Colombia and spending almost a year in Latin America. It was whilst I was working on a coffee farm in Costa Rica that I came up with a plan for River Coffee: ‘a global collaboration of expressive flavour; a sustainable journey from bean to cup with scientific care.
What's your favourite part about working at the Roastery?
Our roastery supported by amazing people. From the team here at River to producers we work with across the world and also our great wholesale partners nationwide. So the community aspect and togetherness of our roastery is my favourite part.
What's your proudest accomplishment?
During lockdown 1.0 we teamed up with a wholesale partner of ours called Hideout Coffee Co. We created a fundraiser for our NHS and raised almost £3000 plus donated 500bags of coffee to frontline workers. I’m really proud of how successful we made it and the impact it had during a really tough time for everyone.
What three words best describe your Roastery?
Approachable - Collaborative - Blue. What’s your favourite place to enjoy a coffee, and what coffee would that be?
In Nicaragua I brewed some coffee with a lovely couple called Ronald and Noelia who we work closely with. They have a small farm and produce amazing coffee. To share their coffee at their farm was a really special experience.
Finally, what Dog & Hat combination would you choose?
A Toy Poodle in a River Beanie.
