Coffee Facts

Asman Arianto is part of the new generation of Indonesian coffee producers, experimenting with washed, honey and natural processes in order to make his co-operative’s coffee stand out in reaction to the global market losing interest in Indonesia’s more traditional wet hulled coffees. He started his co-op, the Ribang
Gayo Musara Co-operative, in 2018 after years of watching his region’s coffee farmers sell their coffee for lower prices than what he saw was possible.

The approach of the co-operative is 3 steps: first, farmers are paid competitive rates when they sell their cherry to the co-operative, followed by an additional end-of-season payment, a share of any profits made from their coffee. This leads to greater financial security, as well as the resources to increase production for the following year. Thanks to this, members have doubled production in just five seasons. Finally, thefarmers receive training and access to a team of expert agronomists, a vital asset in a country still very
much attached to traditional farming methods. This is our second consecutive year of buying Asman Arianto’s natural process coffee, and the results speak for themselves. What we have is a blend of traditional Indonesian (and Timorese) coffee varieties, typically favoured for their disease resistance over their flavour profile, that give incredibly clean and aromatic notes. The Asman Arianto Natural is super bright, with a fresh licorice texture and creamy white chocolate finish, making it one of the most unique espresso coffees we have ever offered.
