How to Brew V60 Coffee at Home

The V60 is the bright, breezy perfectionist of the coffee world: clean, delicate and very much here for the details. In this easy pour over coffee guide, we’ll show you how to brew with 18g of coffee, 300g of water and a 1:16.7 coffee-to-water ratio for a cup that’s clear, balanced and full of flavour.

You’ll bloom it, swirl it, pour those lovely little circles, then let the magic drip through. We’ll also help you tweak your grind size, water temperature, pouring technique and brew time if your coffee tastes too sour, bitter or flat, because even the best brew need a little dialling in sometimes.

What You'll Need

Coffee Kit

V60 dripper + paper filter

Freshly ground coffee

(medium-fine, like table salt)

Kettle

(ideally gooseneck for control)

Scale + timer

~2:30–3:00

1. Rinse & Preheat

  • Rinse the paper filter with hot water.
  • This removes papery taste and warms everything up.
  • Discard rinse water.

2. Add Coffee

  • Add 18g coffee to the filter.
  • Gently shake to level the bed.

3. Bloom (0:00–0:30)

  • Pour ~40g water (about 2–2.5× the coffee weight).
  • Make sure all grounds are saturated.
  • Let it sit for 30–45 seconds

💡 This releases trapped gases like a tiny coffee exhale.

4. Main Pour (0:30–1:30)

  • Slowly pour in spirals up to 200g total
  • Keep the water level steady, not flooding or draining too fast.

5. Final Pour (1:30–2:00)

  • Pour remaining water to reach 300g total
  • Finish with a gentle swirl to even the bed.

6. Drawdown

  • Let it drain completely.
  • Total brew time should land around 2:30–3:00

✓ Dialling In Your Cup

If your shot tastes…off, here’s your troubleshooting spellbook:

Too sour / sharp (fast brew)
→ Grind finer

Too bitter / heavy (slow brew)
→ Grind coarser

Flat / dull
→ Try hotter water or improve pouring consistency

⭑ Pro Tips

Water temp
→ 92–96°C

Pour Style
→ steady and controlled, like painting circles

Fresh beans
→ 7–21 days post-roast = sweet spot. Freshness = flavour fireworks

☺︎ Flavour Vibe Guide

Tea-like, bright, delicate → lighter extraction

Full-bodied, chocolatey → slightly stronger extraction

Sweet, balanced, clear → you nailed it 🎯
