Coffee Facts

Over the past few seasons we have shared some outstanding coffees from Peru, including some memorable lots from the likes of Elizabeth Rojas and Clever Acosta.

These lots were brought to our attention by our long term exporting partners Red Beetle, in conjunction with Finca Churupampa, whose outreach work and processing expertise play a key role in elevating the quality of coffee in the region, and bringing it to the international market.

Finca Churupampa began in 2011 as a single family farm belonging to the Tocto Bermeo family in Chirinos. Two years later, having found success with their own coffee, the family started exporting on behalf of their neighbours too, and the project has grown steadily since - from a handful of local growers to several hundred partner families across Chirinos, La Coipa and Tabaconas today.

Along the way, Churupampa built its own training centre and quality-control lab, cupping thousands of samples a year to help producers improve and get paid for quality, and Eber Tocto became one of Peru's first Q-graders. The farm is now run by the next generation of the family, with Lenin Tocto Minga managing day-to-day operations.

Whilst coffees from the likes of Elizabeth and Clever represent the high point of what can be grown in Peruvian soil, it felt only right that we showcase something more classic and representative of the region, in this case Churupampa’s very own regional lot, consisting of caturra, pache and catimor grown by the many neighbouring farming families it works with.

Each family hand-pulps and ferments their own cherries before the parchment is dried slowly on raised beds under plastic, protecting the coffee through Chirinos' wet, humid harvest. Every family's lot is then cupped and quality-checked against the blend profile, resulting in a consistent and reliable cup year after year.

We had the great pleasure of sharing a beer with Lenin and Richard from Churupampa at Warpigs in Copenhagen during World of Coffee 2024, and it’s great to finally close that loop by sharing their impeccable coffee with you all.
